Such a damage can occur either when performing the safety recall 0000612000 or at the assembly line. A damaged plastic coating of the starter relay may cause moisture to enter. If moisture reaches the circuit board, corrosion can occur on individual components / contacts inside the starter relay. This corrosion damage can cause functional failures. In rare cases, leakage current between corroded contacts can result in component heating. This can progress to heat damage (scorching damage/smoke development) on the starter relay. BMW Motorrad is to conduct a Technical Campaign with customer notification. On affected vehicles the component will be replaced with a conventional electromagnetic starter relay, part number 61368354778, in combination with a software update. |
