These vehicles were originally manufactured with a “Basis” or “Sport” Steering wheel including a driver front airbag module without ammonium nitrate (from another supplier). Therefore, they were/are not covered by already released PSDI5 / SDI safety recalls. According to analysis from Takata and independent test laboratories, a possible degradation of the propellant tablets could lead to an overaggressive combustion in the event the airbag is activated which may cause the inflator body to rupture. In addition, field return tests and study results showed an agerelated change in characteristics, so that a malfunction of the inflators cannot be excluded. The risk will increase according to the age of the vehicle.
